New media is media that emerged since the late 20th century. It mostly consists of interactive and manipulable content that is organized and distributed on digital platforms.

- The advancement of technology throughout time led to the innovations that allowed traditional media to be translated and preserved into new media. This allowed traditional media to stay relevant in the modern world and coexist with new media.
- Media convergence has closed a gap between traditional media and new media, allowing the coexistence of the two and the capability of the old generation to translate to the new generation and vice versa, giving way to new forms of interaction.
- New media such as social networks give so many opportunities of influence to normal users. New media allows one, even when one is a commoner, to speak out and share one's knowledge and information to the public, and potentially being able to effectively make an influence on society.
- In the modern era, people have more power and opportunities than they would have back then. In this age of media convergence, opportunities to influence society given to people equally have never been more evident than ages before it. More and more people are getting access to the internet and therefore access to the opportunities of single-handedly influencing society in a number of ways. Anyone: man, woman, young, old, theist, atheist, can go to a social network, publicly post knowledge or information they want to share, and have themselves be noticed by the public. This gives them the possibility of moving the public in an instant, something that only an already powerful and influential person can do without the help of new media. Media convergence is giving the commoners, the minorities and the vulnerable the opportunities to speak for themselves and be heard, to possibly become such an influential person and be capable of impacting society all on their own.
