Media and Information Languages(Lab)

A local government official was charged of graft and corruption and was suspended from his office. The government official announced that the charges were all fabricated and that he will not step down from his office. A large group of supporters are present to protest. They barricaded the building where the official has once taken office. A struggle seems to start breaking out between the protesters and the police.

The Information I Need

How do people find information that matches my needs? How do I choose from the wide variety of information made available by different sources?

Information is everywhere, and in this age of technology new information is constantly being produced in large amounts. And thanks to the internet, the majority of this information is easily accessible by almost anyone, almost anywhere in the world. But how come so much information is being produced these days than in the last centuries of human civilization? And with so much information, how is it possible to not get overwhelmed by all of it? As a social being, you get to handle your fair share of information and no doubt will you learn a thing or two about how to handle them just from experience, but this is information I will give to you will help you understand more about, well, information!

Technology has given people so many options to create and find information. When someone needs to capture a scene, they have a plethora of cameras to chose from to take a snap.  There are also video cameras to record more than just a single frame. There's  smartphones, one device for numerous uses so much that it is considered a necessity of the daily lives of many. And many more tools, both cutting edge, like the ones mentioned prior, and old school classics, like pen, paper and ink. And lastly, the internet dominates its predecessors as being the best place to find information in almost all aspects. It allows for fast and reliable access to vast amounts of information in its thousands upon thousands of websites and webpages.

All of this technology greatly makes the gathering and generating of new information better both in quality and quantity and the finding and accessing of information faster and more streamlined. People find the information that I need pretty much the same as anybody else finding information in this modern world. The internet is virtually the best source of information around the world, and if that fails then there are still plenty more sources to rely on such as books.

There's so much information constantly being produced along with the vast amounts of information already recorded. Even when you are looking for specific information that you need on the internet, you can still be easily swept up in the swirling pool of information the moment you step inside. You'll be faced with different versions and iterations of the same information from different sources, which can leave you confused if unprepared. Whenever I choose my information, I make sure that I choose multiple sources. Choosing information requires some critical thinking: analyzing if a piece of information is false, which is done by checking if its source is reliable and comparing it with different versions of the information from different sources. This helps me narrow down the information to trust and use.

  • The advancement of technology throughout time led to the innovations that allowed traditional media to be translated and preserved into new media. This allowed traditional media to stay relevant in the modern world and coexist with new media.
  • Media convergence has closed a gap between traditional media and new media, allowing the coexistence of the two and the capability of the old generation to translate to the new generation and vice versa, giving way to new forms of interaction.
  • New media such as social networks give so many opportunities of influence to normal users. New media allows one, even when one is a commoner, to speak out and share one's knowledge and information to the public, and potentially being able to effectively make an influence on society.
  • In the modern era, people have more power and opportunities than they would have back then. In this age of media convergence, opportunities to influence society given to people equally have never been more evident than ages before it. More and more people are getting access to the internet and therefore access to the opportunities of single-handedly influencing society in a number of ways. Anyone: man, woman, young, old, theist, atheist, can go to a social network, publicly post knowledge or information they want to share, and have themselves be noticed by the public. This gives them the possibility of moving the public in an instant, something that only an already powerful and influential person can do without the help of new media. Media convergence is giving the commoners, the minorities and the vulnerable the opportunities to speak for themselves and be heard, to possibly become such an influential person and be capable of impacting society all on their own.

Information Literacy

Knowledge is Power

Knowledge is something you can use to your advantage. It can be manipulated to help or hurt people. It can be used to create or destroy, it can be shared or kept to oneself. It is truly a powerful thing when placed in the right hands. Thus, it has an importance to human life; it can lead to activities that contribute to one gaining wealth and influence.

Importance of Giving Credit to the Source

It is important to give credit to the source of one's work because it is their work and they have a right to it - it is their property. One should respect other people's property. The person who made that work has put effort into it, and it is disrespectful, ungrateful and wrong for one to take it without crediting them. Taking information from a source without crediting the source is the same as stealing someone's physical property.

Academic Trip

Let's say that I was tasked to planjj an academic trip. I should list pertinent information on two possible destinations  and present valid and reliable information. This is what it would look like.

An Essay About an Information Literate Individual

Ben Shapiro is an American conservative political commentator, columnist, author, radio talk show host, and lawyer. He is an intellectual, best known for his witty criticisms on "left-wing" concepts such as white privilege, toxic masculinity and social justice. He is equally upheld by his right-wing supporters and scorned by left-wing so-called Social Justice Warriors(SJWs). He is one of the youngest and most popular conservatives outside mainstream media - quite the person of interest.

I barely knew about this person, mainly because of the fact that he is under my radar as he is mostly visible outside mainstream media. But in one instance I saw a video of him debating against what seemed to be a supporter of something called Transgenderism.  watched just a snippet of this video and he already caught my eye with the way he talked about his direct and daring views on quite controversial topics. Now already, he is quite a literate when it comes to media and information. He is adept in understanding and manipulating information and media, as he has written several books, have went to several debates, talk shows, interviews, and has his own podcast where he discusses about the views and principles he strongly supports. In the little amount of research I have done on him, I have mixed opinions on this man. For one, he supports some principles and concepts that I also support, and he seems to also be aware of the recent ridiculousness on society and is speaking out on it, and may I add he is doing so in quite the joking, witty manner. On the
other hand, he also has views and beliefs that I disagree with to some extent.

Ben Shapiro has his redeeming points and his disagreeable ones, but neutrally he is quite the interesting person. In some cases I would gladly support him, and in other cases I would disagree and leave out on them. But if I would have the opportunity to be able to talk to him, even if it would be simple small talk that turns to large conversations on politics and then ends with a debate, then I would gladly take it.
