Information Literacy

Knowledge is Power

Knowledge is something you can use to your advantage. It can be manipulated to help or hurt people. It can be used to create or destroy, it can be shared or kept to oneself. It is truly a powerful thing when placed in the right hands. Thus, it has an importance to human life; it can lead to activities that contribute to one gaining wealth and influence.

Importance of Giving Credit to the Source

It is important to give credit to the source of one's work because it is their work and they have a right to it - it is their property. One should respect other people's property. The person who made that work has put effort into it, and it is disrespectful, ungrateful and wrong for one to take it without crediting them. Taking information from a source without crediting the source is the same as stealing someone's physical property.

Academic Trip

Let's say that I was tasked to planjj an academic trip. I should list pertinent information on two possible destinations  and present valid and reliable information. This is what it would look like.

An Essay About an Information Literate Individual

Ben Shapiro is an American conservative political commentator, columnist, author, radio talk show host, and lawyer. He is an intellectual, best known for his witty criticisms on "left-wing" concepts such as white privilege, toxic masculinity and social justice. He is equally upheld by his right-wing supporters and scorned by left-wing so-called Social Justice Warriors(SJWs). He is one of the youngest and most popular conservatives outside mainstream media - quite the person of interest.

I barely knew about this person, mainly because of the fact that he is under my radar as he is mostly visible outside mainstream media. But in one instance I saw a video of him debating against what seemed to be a supporter of something called Transgenderism.  watched just a snippet of this video and he already caught my eye with the way he talked about his direct and daring views on quite controversial topics. Now already, he is quite a literate when it comes to media and information. He is adept in understanding and manipulating information and media, as he has written several books, have went to several debates, talk shows, interviews, and has his own podcast where he discusses about the views and principles he strongly supports. In the little amount of research I have done on him, I have mixed opinions on this man. For one, he supports some principles and concepts that I also support, and he seems to also be aware of the recent ridiculousness on society and is speaking out on it, and may I add he is doing so in quite the joking, witty manner. On the
other hand, he also has views and beliefs that I disagree with to some extent.

Ben Shapiro has his redeeming points and his disagreeable ones, but neutrally he is quite the interesting person. In some cases I would gladly support him, and in other cases I would disagree and leave out on them. But if I would have the opportunity to be able to talk to him, even if it would be simple small talk that turns to large conversations on politics and then ends with a debate, then I would gladly take it.

Most Influential Person in My Life and Elements of Information Technology

The Most Influential Person in My Life

Who: My mom
What (is her role): She is my mother (obviously), a role model, an obstacle, and a height that I must pass.
Where (did you meet): At a hospital

Why (is she the most influential person in my life): She has taught me most of the principles I started off with in the beginning of my life.
How (did she influence me): She taught me strictly and firmly, though I would have greatly appreciated tactfulness in her when she was raising me, the things she taught me really were something, to say the least.

BOYLE INTRO1 JEREMIAH SUCGANG

Media and information are two very important factors in today's society, and to me being "literate" in these two things is a vital skill for being part of society. For me, one can be literate in these aspects when one can essentially understand, interpret, and use media and information intellectually and responsibly.

Being literate in media and information is somewhat easy to get started at this point of time, with how advance technology is and how fast the modern generation can learn how to use them. But what most people seem to fall short on is being fully literate in media and information. People easily learn how to essentially understand and use these two, but being able to use them with intellect and responsibility is the part that a lot of people tend to forget about.

A lot of people tend to use these skills recklessly and without thought, most noticeable on the internet, which is the most accessible media and information outlet we have. A lot of people, particularly on social networks, have a tendency to just post anything they feel like posting without a second thought out in public. It's similar to having a person stand in the middle of a crowd and then scream whatever that person wants. It's not pleasant, isn't it? It's not really the best way that person can convey their thoughts, especially when there are clearly plenty more ways of doing so in a better, more civilized fashion, presented right in front of them.

Something I keep in mind in order to avoid such scenarios is to always think before I speak. I validate if my thoughts are comprehensive, then I see if they have to go through the risk of offending someone, and lastly I decide if making these thoughts of mine known are necessary. Is it comprehensive? Will it hurt anyone? Is it necessary? Asking myself these three questions before I speak my thoughts help me be a better media and information literate. Examples of scenarios where I practice this thought process are when I think of rebuttals in debates. Using this thought process also helps me in writing my speeches, making me revise them to be easier to understand and more concise. And lastly this thought process helps me in surprise scenarios where I get into an argument with someone and I want to essentially settle such with little to no grudges from either party.

It's the 21st century. Our technology has come a long way since the first tool mankind has made. Our mediums are no exception. These days, you can simply go ahead and use the various social networks on the internet that allows you to instantly send texts, images, videos and other forms of data to the public or to particular people. Other than social networks, you can browse news websites for information whether it be local news or news from another country. And there is even the quick and efficient search engines of the internet that allows you to virtually find for specific information on the internet.

It's clear that the internet has integrated itself in the lives of many people across the world, and it has simply been widely accepted to now be an important part of many people's lives. The internet has been a strong tool in expressing many things such as democracy. It has become a symbol for freedom of expression and freedom of information and by extension, a symbol of democracy. It's more prominent roles in a democratic society is mainly as a media for expression and information. Freedom of expression and information is what it mainly upholds for the majority of the society. It is a virtual place of equality, where the masses actually have the potential to have influence over the society. Where a commoner is capable of being as influential as a government official or even more.

The media has generally been an integral part of society, and I cannot deny that it has affected my life. I am no stranger when it comes to using it, and I use it quite often in my daily life. It provides me with a vast array of information which I use for my academic and personal learning. I, of course, also use it for my social affairs as it is readily available. And if I decide on making a career in the future, I can see its potential in helping me in getting traction whether it be starting a company or becoming some artist. It has more uses than I can enumerate and it seems that I have just scratched the surface of its potential. It is truly a powerful tool, and for better or for worse, it has impacted countless  human lives, including mine.
